Changing your Terraria server to Journey Difficulty

Terraria Journey difficulty is controlled by the difficulty value in serverconfig.txt. Journey mode uses value 3. Back up your world first if you are changing an active server.

Difficulty values

ValueDifficulty
0Normal
1Expert
2Master
3Journey

Change the server config

  1. Open your Terraria server in the control panel.
  2. Click Configuration Files.
  3. Open serverconfig.txt with the text editor.
  4. Find the difficulty line and set it to:
    difficulty=3
  5. Save the file.
  6. Generate a new Journey world if the current world was created in another mode.
  7. Restart the server and join with a Journey character.

Important Journey mode behaviour

Journey characters can only join Journey worlds. If players cannot connect after the change, confirm that the world and character type match.

Changing the config value does not convert an existing Normal, Expert, or Master world into a Journey world. Use a new world file name or remove the old world after taking a backup so Terraria can generate a fresh Journey world.

Verify the change

Restart the server after saving, then join and confirm the world, difficulty, location, message, or playlist now matches the value you set. If players are online, warn them before restarting.

Common causes

If the old value is still shown, check that you edited the active configuration file and saved it before restarting. For world or difficulty changes, you may need a new world file before the setting takes effect.
