Terraria server difficulty is set in serverconfig.txt. The value should be chosen before generating the world you want to use.
| Value | Difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|---|
0 | Normal | Default Terraria difficulty. |
1 | Expert | Harder enemies and Expert rewards. |
2 | Master | Hardest standard difficulty. |
3 | Journey | Requires Journey characters. |
- Open your Terraria server in the control panel.
- Click Configuration Files.
- Open
serverconfig.txtwith Text Editor or Configuration Editor. - Set the
difficultyvalue you want. Example:difficulty=1 - Save the configuration.
- Generate a new world if the existing world was created with the wrong difficulty.
- Restart the server.
If difficulty does not appear to change, confirm the server is loading the world you regenerated and that the saved config still contains the expected value.
Verify the change
Restart the server after saving, then join and confirm the world, difficulty, location, message, or playlist now matches the value you set. If players are online, warn them before restarting.
Common causes
If the old value is still shown, check that you edited the active configuration file and saved it before restarting. For world or difficulty changes, you may need a new world file before the setting takes effect.
