The Terraria MOTD is the message players see when they join your server. It is set in serverconfig.txt and takes effect after saving the file and restarting the server.
- Open your Terraria server in the control panel.
- Click Configuration Files.
- Open
serverconfig.txtwith Configuration Editor. - Find the MOTD or
motdfield. - Enter the message you want players to see. Example:
motd=Welcome to our Terraria server! - Save the configuration.
- Restart the server.
- Join the server to confirm the new message appears.
If the configuration editor does not show the field, open serverconfig.txt with Text Editor and edit the motd= line directly. Keep the message on one line unless you have tested multi-line formatting with your server version.
Verify the change
Restart the server after saving, then join and confirm the world, difficulty, location, message, or playlist now matches the value you set. If players are online, warn them before restarting.
Common causes
If the old value is still shown, check that you edited the active configuration file and saved it before restarting. For world or difficulty changes, you may need a new world file before the setting takes effect.
