Rust updates frequently, especially around force-wipe periods. Take a backup first, then use Steam Update from the control panel to pull the latest dedicated server files. After the update, check the server starts and reinstall uMod if plugins stop loading.

  1. Open your Rust server in the control panel.
  2. Run a backup before updating: How to backup your Rust server.
  3. Click Steam Update on the left side menu.

  4. Click OK to start the Steam Update task.

  5. Leave the update window open until SteamCMD finishes and shows a completion message.
  6. If the server was stopped before the update, start it after Steam Update finishes. If it was running and remains stopped, start it manually.
  7. Reinstall uMod from Mod Manager after Steam Update finishes, then restart the server. Rust updates can overwrite the uMod/Oxide framework files.
  8. Open Web Console and check for startup or plugin errors.

If Steam reports a compiler or file lock problem, use How to Resolve a "Compiler in Use" Error on Your Rust Server.
