A failed start is usually caused by an incomplete update, an invalid configuration edit, damaged save data or the service exceeding its available memory. Work through one change at a time.
- Open Log Viewer and note the first error from the latest start attempt.
- Check Current Activity & Stats for a task that is still running.
- If the game was just updated, stop the service and run Steam Update once.
- Undo the most recent configuration or file change. Restore a known working backup if the affected file is unclear.
- Start the service and wait before making another change.
Do not repeatedly press Start while an update or restore task is active. When opening a support ticket, include the start time, the first relevant log error and what changed immediately before the problem began.
