This guide explains how to install Sponge on a Minecraft server using Ptero. On our Minecraft servers, Sponge is installed by uploading SpongeForge or SpongeNeo to the mods folder on a Forge or NeoForge server.

Download the Sponge build that matches your server type and Minecraft version: SpongeForge downloads or SpongeNeo downloads.

For Sponge plugins, use the Sponge Ore Repository. If you need a guide on installing plugins, see: How to install plugins on your Minecraft server on Ptero.

Install Sponge

  1. Open your Minecraft server in the control panel and take a backup before changing mod files.
  2. Open Files, then open the mods folder. If the folder does not exist, create it.

  3. Upload the SpongeForge or SpongeNeo jar into the mods folder.
  4. Upload the Sponge plugins you want to use to the folder required by that plugin or Sponge version.
  5. Restart the server and check Console for Sponge startup messages or version errors.

If the server fails to start after installing Sponge, check the first error in Console. The most common causes are using the wrong Sponge build, the wrong Minecraft version, or a Sponge plugin that does not support your server version.
